The following list of duties and activities performed by the Iceland Fire Authority gives some idea of the diversified work performed:
Inspecting whether the laws and regulations regarding fires in buildings are being enforced correctly
Inspecting and approving the design of buildings where special requirements are made with regards to fire
Inspecting and approving fire safety design of building
Inspecting fire safety provisions in all major buildings
Supporting designers and giving guidance on fire safety design of buildings
Advicing local authorities in the communes on all matters to do with fire safety
Controlling that water supply systems can be used for fire fighting
Inspecting fire brigades, their equipment and training
Supporting local authorities with regards to fire safety inspections of buildings
Inspect and approve building materials and equipment for fire prevention in buildings
Education and research in the field of fire prevention
Hold courses and conferences on fire safety
The education of fire fighters
Investigation into major fires that occur and publishing reports on such fires
Produce and re-write regulations, rules and guidelines on fire safety
Publish written material end educational material on fire safety
Cooperation with similar authorities in other countries and follow progress and new technology in the field of fire safety
Responsibility for writing regulations and guidelines on the response to accidents with hazardous materials
